When the cold of winter comes...
Updated: Jul 19
My thoughts about Christmas are mixed. I love the idea that one child can save the world. That with every newborn baby, there is renewed hope. And that for just a moment, even people at war can agree to stop fighting to honor the birth of a child. If only this sentiment lasted more than a few weeks.
I also like the traditions: picking out a tree, decorating, eggnog and brandy, Christmas Eve dinner with my kids and family, and giving gifts. All of these things are wonderful.
As far as music, I'm not much of a traditionalist. Some favorites below:
1. God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman by Loreena McKennit.
2. The Wexford Carol by Yo Yo Ma and Alison Krauss
3. What Child Is This played on classical guitar or Lute. :)
4. Christmas Secrets by Enya
Christmas bells ring out their chimes, I hear them echo through the night. And moonlight shines upon the road, And trembles on the falling snow.
I look into the midnight blue, So many stars I never knew
If you don't come what will I do
Who shall I tell my secrets to?
5. "In Dreams" from The Lord of the Rings
When the cold of Winter comes Starless night will cover day In the veiling of the sun We will walk in bitter rain But in dreams I can hear your name And in dreams We will meet again When the seas and mountains fall And we come to end of days In the dark I hear a call Calling me there will go there And back again
I look forward to my kids arriving for Christmas every year. It is the only time my family is together. At my center, I am a mother and being a mother is my main space in the universe.
My daughter lives in Texas and my sons live in Connecticut. I can't wait to sit around the table and enjoy Christmas Eve dinner together. Afterwards, we will have a huge plate of home-baked cookies compliments of our upcoming cookie swap party. We will open gifts. Maybe we will watch a movie, play music, or go for a hike under the beautiful New Mexico moon.
When the cold of winter comes, it is the love of family that keeps me warm..
