Last Friday, Tee and I wandered into something magical tucked inside one of my favorite places in Austin—Wheatsville Co-op. You may know it as that warm, inviting grocery store filled with beautiful handmade soaps, fresh-made vegan meals, fair trade crafts, and all kinds of local treasures. But they also many events including a cozy open mic night.

Every other Friday evening, their community room—complete with soft yellow curtains, comfy couches, and an eclectic mix of chairs and tables—transforms into a little creative haven. You can grab a vegan dinner or snack from the store (I personally can’t resist the sourdough brownies from The Sourdough Project—seriously, they’re life-changing) and settle in for an evening of music. The open mic drew a beautiful mix of people—all ages, amateurs and seasoned performers. We heard poetry, music, spoken word, and even a few passionate talks. Every performance was met with warmth and encouragement. There was this unspoken agreement in the room: this was a space to be yourself, share what moves you, and connect with others doing the same. This is the kind of place that makes Austin great.

Wheatsville Co-op is more than a store—it’s a mission. Dedicated to local, sustainable food, Wheatsville currently supports over 150 local farmers and producers. Its purpose is to help build a self-reliant, self-empowering community that promotes cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation. It's been voted Best Neighborhood Grocery by the Austin Chronicle’s Readers Poll more than 15 times.

I left inspired. Inspired to create. Inspired to perform again. Inspired by the kindness of strangers and the power of community. There’s something so special about people gathering, just to listen and support one another.

If you’re in Austin, check it out. Whether you want to perform or just soak it in, Wheatsville Co-op’s Open Mic Night is a great night out.

See you there next time. ❤️🎤
