I am often asked the question:
"How do you write a song?"
I start with a poem about a personal experience. I jot down the words using a pencil. I like scratching, erasing, crumpling and tossing. I work on the poem until it takes the shape of a few verses, a chorus. and a bridge. After the poem is sketched, I strum chords on my guitar to find a key/sound that matches the emotion or mood of my words. After I find the key, I try different melodies. If it's right, I know it immediately. It is one of the closest things to magic I've experienced.
"If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be.”
